The role of IT in pandemic planning is largely delivering remote access to your systems & maintaining communications with staff and customers.

Catering for your Teleworking and Travelling Users

What do your staff need to work efficiently from home?
Certain roles and certain industries suit a teleworker model, where staff can work from home to perform some or most of their functions. The challenge is to make staff just as productive from home as they are in the office. A fast and reliable broadband connection is a starting point.

Email is usually the simplest application to provide remote access, and for some businesses, that coupled with providing access to some shared storage drives will be sufficient to keep the wheels turning. But what about accessing critical business applications?

Many applications need to be “close” to their data. For example, accounting applications such as MYOB depend on fast access to a large ‘database’ – and performance is awful when remotely accessing them from home. Access to data on a file server can be difficult, especially when users are working on large documents remotely. Even in the case of applications such as Lotus Notes applications, which “sample” the data required rather than access the whole database when accessed remotely, the client software must be installed on every device which is used to gain access.

Using virtualised desktop technology remote users enjoy the same desktop experience as if they were in the office. In a virtual desktop environment, all data is hosted centrally on the businesses servers. Users simply login from any laptop or PC via a remote desktop connection, online portal, or a client installed on their machine, to access the desktop from virtually anywhere, using very little local resource. You may even consider implementing thin client technology in the office and for home users. Thin clients are simple, small devices which are configured to only deliver access to the specific virtual desktop environment.

With this approach, organisations can deliver secure, isolated desktops that are always on and are accessible from anywhere. With all data hosted centrally, maintenance and set-up of new users is simple. Of course the benefits of implementing a virtual desktop or virtual application environment extend far beyond the teleworker, as your business enjoys the benefit of centralised management of endpoints & applications, simpler deployment to branch offices, and the many cost & environmental benefits associated with the implementation of thin client technology.
